3-Day Kashmir Itinerary for a Long Weekend

By the Kashmir Holiday Packages Online team · 13 October 2026 · 8 min read

Three days is not long in Kashmir, but it is enough for a memorable taste of the valley, especially for travellers from Delhi and north India who can fly in for a long weekend. The secret is to keep things simple: one base in Srinagar, one carefully chosen day trip, and no attempt to squeeze in everything.

This guide gives you a tested 3-day itinerary with two versions of the day trip (Gulmarg or Sonamarg), a winter variation, timings that work with typical flights, and tips on what to book and what to skip.

Is 3 days enough for Kashmir?

It is enough to see Srinagar’s lakes and gardens and spend one day in the mountains. It is not enough to see Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg properly; trying to do all three in three days means more time in a car than outside it. Treat a 3-day trip as a first taste, and plan a longer return visit.

Day 1: Arrive in Srinagar and settle onto the lake

Midday: Arrive at Srinagar airport. Your driver meets you and takes you to Boulevard Road, where a shikara carries you to your houseboat. Have lunch on board.

Afternoon: Rest for an hour; Srinagar is at about 1,600 metres and an easy first afternoon helps. Then visit Shankaracharya Temple for a panorama of the city, or Hazratbal Shrine on the northern shore of the lake.

Sunset: Take a one-hour shikara ride past the lotus beds, Meena Bazaar and Char Chinar. Time it so you are on the water as the sun goes down.

Evening: Dinner on the houseboat. Ask your host to arrange a shikara for the floating market on your last morning.

Day 2 (option A): Gulmarg day trip

Best from December to June, and any time you want snow or the Gondola.

  • 7:30 am: Leave Srinagar after an early breakfast to beat traffic and Gondola queues.
  • 9:30 am: Reach Gulmarg. In winter, rent snow boots and coats at Tangmarg on the way up.
  • 10:00 am: Ride the Gondola to Kongdori (Phase 1) and, if open and tickets allow, to Apharwat (Phase 2). Book online in advance.
  • 1:00 pm: Lunch at Kongdori or back at the base.
  • 2:00 pm: Sledging or snow play in winter; a pony ride to Strawberry Valley or a walk to St. Mary’s Church in summer.
  • 4:00 pm: Drive back to Srinagar, stopping at Drung Waterfall if time allows.
  • Evening: Check in to a hotel in Srinagar and have a Wazwan dinner.

Day 2 (option B): Sonamarg day trip

Best from May to October, when the meadows are green and Thajiwas Glacier is easy to reach.

  • 7:30 am: Leave Srinagar along the Sindh River.
  • 10:30 am: Reach Sonamarg. Walk or ride a pony to Thajiwas Glacier.
  • 1:30 pm: Lunch by the meadow.
  • 2:30 pm: Riverside walk or rafting on the Sindh (in season).
  • 4:00 pm: Drive back to Srinagar.

Day 3: Floating market, Mughal Gardens and departure

  • 5:30 am: Floating vegetable market by shikara (it ends by about 7 am).
  • 8:00 am: Breakfast and check-out.
  • 9:00 am: Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, then Chashme Shahi.
  • 12:00 pm: Quick shopping stop for saffron, dry fruits or a shawl at Polo View or Residency Road.
  • 1:30 pm: Lunch and drive to the airport. Allow at least two hours before your flight for security checks.

If your flight leaves in the morning, do the gardens on Day 1 afternoon instead of Shankaracharya and keep Day 3 for the floating market only.

Winter version (December to February)

  • Day 1: Arrive, heated houseboat, short shikara ride with blankets.
  • Day 2: Gulmarg for snow, sledging and the Gondola. Consider staying overnight in Gulmarg for more snow time.
  • Day 3: Return to Srinagar, harissa breakfast in the old city, Mughal Gardens under snow, departure.

Leave a buffer: heavy snowfall can delay flights or close the Gulmarg road for a few hours.

If you have 4 days

Add a night in Pahalgam or Gulmarg:

  • Option 1: Day 1 Srinagar, Day 2 Gulmarg overnight, Day 3 Srinagar sightseeing, Day 4 departure.
  • Option 2: Day 1–2 Srinagar, Day 3 Pahalgam overnight via Pampore, Day 4 Aru and Betaab, then airport.

What to book in advance

  • Flights: Delhi–Srinagar flights are frequent but fill up on long weekends.
  • Gondola tickets: essential for Gulmarg in season.
  • Houseboat: a licensed deluxe or premium boat.
  • Private cab: a driver for all three days saves time and negotiating.

Budget guide

A 3-night land package with a houseboat night, 3 star hotel, private cab and breakfast and dinner typically costs around ₹8,800 to ₹11,500 per person on twin sharing, depending on season. Add Gondola tickets, pony rides, lunches, shopping and flights.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trying to see Pahalgam and Gulmarg in 3 days. You will spend most of the trip driving.
  • Arriving on a late evening flight. You lose most of Day 1.
  • Skipping the houseboat. It is the one experience you can’t get anywhere else.
  • Not booking the Gondola. Walk-up tickets are rare in season.

Three-day plans for different travellers

For couples

Book two nights on a houseboat, one on Dal and one on Nigeen, and keep the day trip short. Gulmarg is the romantic choice in winter; in summer, a slow afternoon in Doodhpathri’s meadows is just as lovely and far quieter. Ask for a private sunset shikara with kahwa on your first evening.

For families

Choose Gulmarg for the Gondola and snow, or Pahalgam if you’d rather have river walks and pony rides. Keep mornings active and afternoons relaxed. A houseboat night will be the highlight for children; just keep an eye on them on the deck.

For first-timers on a budget

Stay in a standard or deluxe houseboat with meals included, share a cab, and choose Gondola Phase 1 only. Eat lunch at local restaurants and bakeries. You’ll see the highlights without overspending.

For photographers

Plan everything around light: the floating market at dawn on day 2, the Mughal Gardens early on day 3, and Pari Mahal or a shikara at sunset every evening.

What you’ll miss in three days

It’s worth being honest about what a short trip can’t cover, so you can plan your next visit. In three days you won’t see Pahalgam’s valleys (unless you swap Gulmarg for them), Sonamarg’s glaciers (in winter), or offbeat places like Gurez, Yusmarg and south Kashmir’s springs. You’ll also miss slow evenings in the mountains. That’s fine: almost everyone who visits Kashmir for three days wants to come back for a week.

Smart time savers

  • Book an early flight in. Arriving by 11 am gives you a full first afternoon.
  • Keep the same driver all three days. No time lost negotiating or waiting.
  • Pre-book Gondola tickets online. Queues for walk-up tickets can take hours.
  • Have breakfast early on the day trip. Leaving Srinagar by 7:30 am beats the traffic.
  • Shop on the way to the airport. Saffron and dry fruit shops are on the route.

If it’s your first visit and you can only choose one, Gulmarg is usually the favourite. In summer, Sonamarg’s glaciers and meadows feel wilder and are a little less crowded.

Eating well in three days

  • Day 1 dinner: home-cooked Kashmiri food on your houseboat.
  • Day 2 lunch: a simple meal at Gulmarg or Sonamarg; kahwa to warm up.
  • Day 2 dinner: a set Wazwan meal for two in Srinagar.
  • Day 3 breakfast: fresh bakery bread with noon chai after the floating market.

That gives you a taste of Kashmir’s three great food traditions, home cooking, Wazwan and bakery culture, in just three days.

What to buy on a short trip

With limited time, keep shopping simple. Saffron, dry fruits and kahwa mix are light and easy to carry. A Pashmina stole or a papier-mâché box makes a lovely gift. For expensive items like carpets, take your time; it’s fine to choose on your next visit. The government emporium on Residency Road and established stores at Polo View are convenient for quick, reliable shopping.

Leave wanting more

A three-day trip is a beautiful introduction. Most travellers leave with a list of places they want to see next time: Pahalgam’s valleys, Sonamarg’s glaciers, a winter in Gulmarg or the quiet meadows of Doodhpathri. That’s the best sign of a good first trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I visit Gulmarg and Sonamarg in 3 days?

It is possible but tiring. Choose one: Gulmarg for snow and the Gondola, Sonamarg for glaciers and summer meadows.

Is a 3-day Kashmir trip worth it?

Yes, as a first taste. You will see Dal Lake, the Mughal Gardens and one mountain destination.

What is the best month for a short trip?

April to June and September to October offer pleasant weather. January is best for snow.

Do I need a guide?

Not essential, but a good driver who knows the routes saves time. A local guide adds a lot in the old city.

Can I do Pahalgam in a 3-day trip?

Yes, instead of Gulmarg. Spend night 2 in Pahalgam, see Aru and Betaab, and return to Srinagar on day 3.

Which day trip is better for children?

Gulmarg in winter for snow, Pahalgam in summer for pony rides and picnics.

How early should I book a 3-day trip?

Three to four weeks ahead for normal dates, and six to eight weeks ahead for April, June and New Year.
