Getting to Kashmir is easier than ever. Srinagar has a busy airport with direct flights from many Indian cities, the long-awaited rail link now carries Vande Bharat trains through the Pir Panjal from Katra, and the Jammu–Srinagar highway has been transformed by new tunnels. Each option has its own advantages depending on where you are coming from, your budget and how much of the journey you want to enjoy.
This guide compares flights, trains and road routes to Kashmir, with practical tips on booking, timing, luggage and security checks, plus advice on getting from the airport or station to your hotel or houseboat.
| Option | From Delhi (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Flight to Srinagar | About 1.5 hours direct | Speed and convenience |
| Train via Katra | Train to Katra, then about 3 hours on the Vande Bharat to Srinagar | Scenery, combining with Vaishno Devi |
| Road via Jammu | About 800 km, usually two days | Road trips, flexibility |
Srinagar’s Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport is the main gateway. It has direct flights from Delhi throughout the day and from several other cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Amritsar and Jammu, with routes and frequencies changing by season. Travellers from other cities usually connect through Delhi.
The airport is about 12 to 15 kilometres from Dal Lake, roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road. Prepaid taxis are available, but if you have booked a package, your driver will meet you at arrivals. Houseboat guests are dropped at a ghat on Boulevard Road and taken across by shikara.
The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla rail link, a major engineering project with dozens of tunnels and spectacular bridges, including the Chenab bridge, now connects the Kashmir valley with the national network via Katra. Vande Bharat trains run between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar in about three hours.
The train is ideal if you are combining Mata Vaishno Devi with Kashmir, or if you love scenic rail journeys.
The main road route runs about 250 kilometres from Jammu to Srinagar. New tunnels, including the Chenani–Nashri tunnel near Patnitop and the Banihal–Qazigund tunnel under the Pir Panjal, have cut travel time and reduced closures. The drive now takes about six to eight hours depending on traffic and weather.
From Delhi, the road route is about 800 kilometres via Panipat, Ambala, Ludhiana, Pathankot and Jammu. Most travellers take two days, staying overnight in Jammu or Katra. From Chandigarh, it is about 550 kilometres.
The historic Mughal Road connects Poonch and Rajouri with Shopian in south Kashmir over Peer Ki Gali pass. It is scenic but seasonal, usually open from around May to November, and can close in bad weather. It suits adventurous road-trippers.
The Srinagar–Leh highway via Zojila Pass and Sonamarg is usually open from around May to November. Many travellers fly into Srinagar and drive to Leh, or the reverse.
Within Kashmir, most travellers use a private cab with a driver for the whole trip. It is the most comfortable and flexible way to move between Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. In Pahalgam and Sonamarg, local union taxis handle inner sightseeing. Shared taxis and buses also run between towns for budget travellers, but they are slower and less predictable.
| From | Best option | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi | Direct flight (about 1.5 hours) | Many daily flights; train via Katra is a scenic alternative |
| Mumbai | Direct or one-stop flight | Direct flights on some days; otherwise via Delhi |
| Bengaluru | Direct or one-stop flight | Allow a full travel day |
| Kolkata | One-stop flight via Delhi | Some direct options in season |
| Chennai | One-stop flight | Via Delhi or Bengaluru |
| Hyderabad | Direct or one-stop flight | Check current schedules |
| Chandigarh, Amritsar | Short flight, or road via Jammu | Road trip takes a long day |
| Jammu | Road (6 to 8 hours) or train via Katra | Combine with Vaishno Devi |
Routes and schedules change often, so always check the latest options when you book.
Srinagar’s airport is compact and easy to use. After landing, you collect your bags, pass a registration desk for foreign nationals if needed, and walk out to the arrivals area where drivers wait with name cards. Prepaid taxi counters are available for travellers without a booked transfer. Mobile networks work at the airport if you have a postpaid connection.
When leaving, give yourself plenty of time. There is a security check on the road to the airport, another at the terminal entrance, and the usual airline and security checks inside. Two to two and a half hours before your flight is sensible, and more in winter or peak season.
Srinagar railway station is in Nowgam, on the southern edge of the city, about 30 to 40 minutes from Dal Lake depending on traffic. Taxis are available, but it’s easier to have your driver waiting. Security checks at the station can take time, so keep your ticket and ID handy and arrive early for departures.
Take a morning flight from Delhi, arrive in Srinagar about 1.5 hours later, and be on your houseboat by lunchtime. Ideal for short trips and long weekends.
Take an early Vande Bharat or express train from Delhi to Katra, stay overnight (and visit Vaishno Devi if you wish), then take the Vande Bharat to Srinagar the next morning. You’ll cross spectacular bridges and tunnels through the Pir Panjal and arrive in the valley by midday.
Drive to Jammu or Patnitop on day one, and continue through the Banihal tunnel to Srinagar on day two. Allow plenty of time for stops and traffic.
Take a direct flight if available, or connect through Delhi. Plan to arrive by early afternoon so you can still enjoy a sunset shikara ride on your first evening.
Most of the year, travel to Kashmir is smooth. In winter, snowfall can delay flights and close the Jammu–Srinagar highway for a day or so. In heavy summer rain, landslides can occasionally block roads. The best protection is simple: build a buffer day before any onward connection, choose morning flights, and travel with an operator who keeps track of road and weather updates.
| Destination | From Srinagar |

| Gulmarg | About 2 hours |
| Pahalgam | About 3 hours |

| Gurez | About 5 to 6 hours |
| Leh (by road) | Two days via Kargil |
