Gulmarg is India’s best-known ski resort and one of the most dramatic places to learn in Asia. You do not need any experience to start. Here is what a first-timer should know.
When is the ski season?
The season usually runs from late December to mid-March. January and February have the most reliable snow. Early December and late March can be patchy.
How the slopes work
The Gulmarg Gondola runs in two phases:
Phase 1 (Gulmarg to Kongdori): gentler, tree-lined slopes. This is where beginners and intermediates ski.
Phase 2 (Kongdori to Apharwat): high, steep and open terrain near 4,000 m. For experienced skiers only, ideally with a guide.
Beginners also learn on the nursery slopes near the resort, served by small lifts.

Lessons
Book a certified instructor for at least your first two or three days. Most beginners can link turns on gentle slopes after three to four days of lessons. Group lessons are cheaper; private lessons are faster.
Gear
Rent locally: skis or snowboard, boots, poles and helmets are available in Gulmarg.
Bring or rent: a waterproof jacket and trousers, thermals, gloves, goggles and a warm hat.
Don’t forget: sunscreen and lip balm. The sun on snow is strong at this altitude.

How long to stay
Plan at least 4 to 5 nights in Gulmarg to make real progress. A 1-night visit is enough for a taster lesson and sledging, not for learning.
Safety
Never ski off-piste from Phase 2 without a qualified local guide and avalanche gear.
Check the Gondola and weather status every morning; Phase 2 closes in high winds.
Acclimatise: take it easy on day one, drink water and avoid alcohol the first night.
Our Gulmarg ski packages include stays near the Gondola, equipment rental, lift passes and lessons with certified instructors.
