Gulmarg is the place most people picture when they imagine snow in India. Set in a wide, cup-shaped meadow on the slopes of the Pir Panjal, about 50 kilometres west of Srinagar, it changes completely with the seasons: a ski resort buried in snow from December to March, and a carpet of grass and wildflowers from May to September.
This guide covers everything you need to plan a visit: how to get there, how the famous Gondola works, what to do in each season, where to stay, how much time to give it, and the local rules that catch first-time visitors by surprise.
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Altitude | About 2,650 m (resort); Gondola Phase 2 reaches close to 4,000 m |
| Distance from Srinagar | About 50 km, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road |
| Best for snow | Late December to early March |
| Best for meadows and flowers | May to September |
| Ideal stay | 1 night for sightseeing, 4 to 6 nights for skiing |
| Nearest airport | Srinagar (Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport) |
The name Gulmarg means “meadow of flowers”. It was a summer retreat for Kashmiri royalty and later became a favourite hill station during the British period, when a golf course, a church and wooden cottages were built on the meadow. St. Mary’s Church, built in 1902, still stands on a small rise in the middle of the resort. After independence Gulmarg developed into a winter sports centre, and the Gondola opened in stages from the late 1990s, turning it into one of the best-known ski destinations in Asia.
All visitors travel by road from Srinagar. The route passes through Magam and Tangmarg, after which the road climbs through pine and fir forest in a series of hairpin bends. In good weather the drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
The Gondola is the main reason many people come to Gulmarg. It is a cable car that runs in two phases:
| Phase | Route | Approx. altitude | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phase 1 | Gulmarg base to Kongdori | About 3,080 m | Families, first-timers, beginner skiers, sledging |
| Phase 2 | Kongdori to Apharwat ridge | Close to 4,000 m | Spectacular views, experienced skiers, snow even in early summer |
Each phase takes roughly 10 to 12 minutes. From the top of Phase 2 on a clear day you can see far across the Pir Panjal, and in summer short walks lead towards Alpather Lake, which can stay frozen into June.
In winter Gulmarg becomes a snowfield. Snow depths on the upper slopes can be several metres, and the powder is light and dry, which is why skiers come from around the world.
When the snow melts, Gulmarg turns into a vast green bowl edged with forest, and the higher slopes are dotted with wildflowers. It is cooler than the plains by a wide margin, which makes it a popular escape in May and June.
March and April are transition months. Snow lingers on the upper slopes while the meadow begins to thaw; some years offer late-season skiing into March. October and November bring crisp air, clear skies and golden light, with the first snow often arriving in November. These shoulder months are quieter and good value.
Gulmarg has a limited number of hotels, which means rooms are expensive and scarce in peak season. Options range from simple guesthouses to well-known luxury resorts with views of the slopes.
Book early for Christmas, New Year, January and the April to June school-holiday period. Many travellers visit Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar, but staying one night lets you enjoy the resort in the quiet morning before the day-trip crowds arrive.
| Type of traveller | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Short Kashmir trip | Day trip from Srinagar |
| First-time visitor, families, couples | 1 night |
| Photographers and walkers | 2 nights |
| Beginner skiers | 4 to 5 nights with lessons |
| Experienced skiers | 5 to 7 nights |
Gulmarg fits neatly into most Kashmir itineraries. A classic route is Srinagar for two or three nights, one night in Gulmarg, then one or two nights in Pahalgam. The drive from Gulmarg to Pahalgam takes four to five hours via Srinagar and the Pampore saffron fields. In winter, many travellers stay longer in Gulmarg and skip Pahalgam, where some roads close with snow.
Gulmarg is a wonderful place for families, as long as you plan around altitude and cold. Children love sledging, building snowmen and the Gondola ride, and the gentle slopes near the resort are ideal for a first taste of snow. Keep these points in mind:
Gulmarg is one of the most photogenic places in Kashmir. The best light comes early in the morning and in the hour before sunset, when the low sun throws long shadows across the snow or meadow. St. Mary’s Church against snowy peaks, the Gondola cabins climbing through the forest, and the view from Kongdori over the valley are classic shots. On clear days in summer, Nanga Parbat can be seen from Khilanmarg and the upper slopes. Protect your camera from cold and condensation by keeping it in your bag when moving between warm rooms and the outdoors.
Most visitors eat at their hotel, and many Gulmarg hotels serve good Kashmiri and North Indian food. Small cafés and dhabas near the Gondola base and at Kongdori sell tea, kahwa, Maggi noodles, parathas and snacks, which are welcome on a cold day. Prices are higher than in Srinagar, reflecting the cost of bringing supplies up the mountain.
Absolutely. The green meadows, wildflowers, pony rides and the Gondola to Apharwat, where snow often remains into June, make summer a beautiful time to visit.
Yes, and many people do. Leave early to avoid traffic and Gondola queues. Staying overnight, though, lets you enjoy the quiet mornings and evenings.
Yes, especially in April to June and December to January. Tickets are sold online and sell out quickly, particularly for Phase 2.
Snow usually arrives in late November or December and lasts until March, with the deepest snow in January and February.
Yes. Beginners learn on gentle slopes near the resort and around Phase 1 with certified instructors. Four or five days of lessons is enough to ski confidently on easy runs.
Most of our Kashmir packages include Gulmarg, either as a day trip or an overnight stay, and our ski packages include stays near the Gondola, equipment rental and certified instructors. Tell us your dates and whether you want snow or meadows, and we will suggest the best plan and help you book Gondola tickets early.
