Best for snow: December to February

Gulmarg is usually snowbound from late December, and Srinagar often gets snowfall in January. Pack thermals, waterproof boots and gloves, and keep a spare day in your plan for road closures.

Best for flowers: late March to May

The Tulip Garden blooms for a few weeks from late March into April, followed by meadow flowers in Gulmarg and Pahalgam in May. This is one of the busiest periods, so book early.

Best for outdoor activities: June to August

All roads and passes are open. Summer is the time for treks, rafting, Sonamarg and offbeat valleys like Gurez. It is also school holiday season, so expect crowds in June.

Best for photography and calm: September to November

Skies are clear, the air is crisp and crowds thin out. From late October the chinar trees turn red and gold, and the saffron fields of Pampore bloom purple.

Our tip

If you are flexible, travel in September, October or early March. Prices are lower, hotels are easier to book, and the valley is at its most peaceful.
