Kashmir in Summer: June to August Guide

By the Kashmir Holiday Packages Online team · 13 October 2026 · 8 min read

When the plains of north India bake at 45°C, Kashmir is green, cool and fully awake. From June to August every road and valley is open, the meadows of Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam are at their lushest, rivers run fast with snowmelt for rafting, and the high-altitude treks open up. Summer is Kashmir’s busiest season for good reason: it is when the valley is most accessible and most varied.

This guide covers what summer weather is like, where to go, the best summer activities, how to handle crowds and the Amarnath Yatra period, what to pack and a sample itinerary.

Summer weather

PlaceTypical dayTypical night
Srinagar25°C to 32°C14°C to 18°C
Pahalgam20°C to 26°C9°C to 13°C
Gulmarg18°C to 24°C8°C to 12°C
Sonamarg16°C to 22°C6°C to 10°C

These are typical ranges. Srinagar can feel warm on still afternoons, but mornings and evenings are pleasant everywhere. Short afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in July and August, though Kashmir lies largely beyond the reach of the heavy monsoon that soaks the rest of India.

Why visit Kashmir in summer?

  • Everything is open: Sonamarg, Gurez, Bangus, Lolab, Daksum, Sinthan Top and the high passes are all accessible.
  • Green meadows: Gulmarg, Aru, Betaab and Doodhpathri are carpeted in grass and wildflowers.
  • Adventure season: rafting, trekking, camping, horse riding and fishing are at their best.
  • Escape the heat: pleasant days and cool nights after the scorching plains.
  • Long days: daylight lasts well into the evening, giving more time for sightseeing.

Where to go in summer

Sonamarg

Summer is Sonamarg’s season. The meadows are green, Thajiwas Glacier is a short walk or pony ride away, and the road beyond to Zojila and Zero Point is usually open. Rafting on the Sindh is exhilarating.

Gulmarg

The snow is gone from the meadow, replaced by grass and wildflowers. Ride the Gondola to Apharwat, where snow patches often linger into July, and walk to Khilanmarg or, for fit walkers, towards Alpather Lake.

Pahalgam

The Lidder River runs strong, rafting is in full swing, and Aru Valley is the base for summer treks. Expect crowds and heightened security during the Amarnath Yatra.

Gurez and north Kashmir

Summer is the only practical time for Gurez, Bangus and parts of Lolab, when roads over high passes are open.

Srinagar

Lotus flowers bloom on Dal Lake in July and August, evenings on the water are long and warm, and the gardens are lush.

Summer activities

  • White-water rafting: on the Lidder near Pahalgam and the Sindh near Sonamarg, usually May to August.
  • Trekking: the Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar-Marsar and Kolahoi treks run from July to mid-September.
  • Pony rides and walks: across meadows in Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Yusmarg.
  • Camping: riverside camps in Sonamarg and Gurez.
  • Trout fishing: in season, with a permit from the fisheries department.
  • Golf: at Gulmarg and Pahalgam’s scenic courses.
  • Lotus season on Dal Lake: a shikara ride through the lotus beds in July and August.
  • Fruit season: cherries in June, apricots and plums in July, early apples in August.

The Amarnath Yatra

The annual pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave shrine usually runs from late June or early July to August, with pilgrims travelling via Pahalgam (the traditional route through Chandanwari) and Baltal near Sonamarg. During this period:

  • Pahalgam and Sonamarg are busier, and hotels fill up.
  • Security is heightened, with convoys and checkpoints on some roads.
  • Some roads or areas, including Chandanwari, may have restricted access for non-pilgrims at times.
  • Travel times can be longer; plan buffers.

Your tour operator will plan around Yatra schedules. If you prefer quieter valleys, consider June or late August to September.

Crowds and booking

June is the peak of summer tourism, with Indian school holidays and many families travelling. Book flights, houseboats and Gulmarg hotels 45 to 60 days in advance. July and August are slightly quieter in Srinagar but busy in Pahalgam and Sonamarg because of the Yatra.

What to pack for summer

  • Light, breathable clothes for the day.
  • A fleece or light jacket for evenings and higher altitudes.
  • A rain jacket for afternoon showers.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat; UV is strong at altitude.
  • Comfortable walking shoes; trekking boots for treks.
  • Insect repellent for evenings by rivers and lakes.
  • Modest clothing for shrines and the old city.

Summer in Ladakh too

Summer is also the season to combine Kashmir with Ladakh. The Srinagar–Leh highway over Zojila is usually open from around May, and June to September is ideal for a road trip to Leh, Nubra and Pangong. See our Kashmir to Ladakh road trip guide.

Beating the summer crowds

Summer is Kashmir’s busiest season, but a few simple tricks help you enjoy it without the crush:

  • Start early. Leave for Gulmarg, Sonamarg or Pahalgam by 7:30 am. Popular spots are quiet before 10 am.
  • Stay overnight in the mountains. Day visitors leave by late afternoon; evenings and mornings are peaceful.
  • Visit offbeat places. Doodhpathri, Yusmarg, Daksum and Gurez see a fraction of the crowds.
  • Choose weekdays for the most popular sights; weekends bring local visitors too.
  • Book ahead. Flights, Gulmarg hotels and Gondola tickets sell out in June.

Summer food and fruit

Summer is fruit season in Kashmir. Cherries arrive in late May and June, followed by apricots, plums, peaches and early apples. Roadside stalls along the highway sell baskets of fresh fruit, often picked that morning. On Dal Lake, lotus stem (nadru) is harvested and appears in dishes like nadru yakhni and crispy fried nadru. Cool off with a glass of fresh lassi or a scoop of local ice cream on Boulevard Road.

Summer festivals and events

  • Lotus season on Dal Lake in July and August.
  • Shepherds’ migrations: Gujjar and Bakarwal families move their flocks to high meadows in early summer, a striking sight on mountain roads.
  • Eid celebrations when they fall in summer.
  • Amarnath Yatra in July and August.

Staying cool and comfortable

  • Plan sightseeing in Srinagar for mornings and evenings, and rest in the warmest part of the afternoon.
  • Wear light cotton or linen, a hat and sunscreen.
  • Drink plenty of water, especially at altitude.
  • Choose rooms with fans or air conditioning in Srinagar; most mountain hotels don’t need them.
  • Keep a light jacket for evenings in Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Summer itineraries by length

4 nights: the quick summer escape

Two nights in Srinagar with a houseboat stay, then one night each in Sonamarg and Pahalgam. You’ll see the lake, the gardens, a glacier and a river valley. Gulmarg can be added as a day trip from Srinagar if you leave early.

6 nights: the classic summer trip

Srinagar (2 nights), Sonamarg (1), Gulmarg (1) and Pahalgam (2). This is the best balance of variety and rest, and it’s how our Kashmir Four Valleys Panorama runs.

8 nights or more: summer adventure

Add Gurez for two nights, a short trek from Aru, or a Kashmir to Ladakh road trip over Zojila. Summer is the only season when all of these are open, so it’s the time to go further.

Summer with children

School holidays make summer the busiest family season. Children love the long days, pony rides, snow patches at Thajiwas and Apharwat, and picnics in Betaab Valley. To keep everyone happy, plan short drives, book family rooms early, and include rest time in the afternoons. Rafting on the easier stretches of the Lidder is a highlight for older children; check the operator’s minimum age.

Summer for couples

Summer evenings are long and warm, perfect for sunset shikara rides and riverside dinners. Book a riverside cottage in Pahalgam and a houseboat on quieter Nigeen Lake to escape the busiest areas. Late August and early September are lovely and slightly less crowded than June.

Monsoon in Kashmir

Kashmir sits largely beyond the reach of the Indian monsoon, so July and August bring occasional showers and thunderstorms rather than days of heavy rain. Storms can occasionally cause landslides on mountain roads, especially on the Jammu–Srinagar highway and the roads to Gurez and Sonamarg. Flying into Srinagar and keeping a buffer day in your plan is the easiest way to travel smoothly in late summer.

Packing list in brief

  • Light cotton clothes for the day.
  • A fleece or light jacket for evenings and mountain resorts.
  • A rain jacket or compact umbrella.
  • Comfortable walking shoes and sandals.
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.
  • Insect repellent.
  • A reusable water bottle.
