How to Choose Honeymoon Hotels and Houseboats in Kashmir

By the Kashmir Holiday Packages Online team · 13 October 2026 · 8 min read

Where you stay shapes the mood of a honeymoon more than any sightseeing. In Kashmir the choice is unusually varied: carved wooden houseboats on still lakes, heritage hotels in old gardens, ski lodges in the snow, and riverside cottages in pine forests. Choosing well means matching each stay to the experience you want there, and knowing what to check before you book.

This guide explains the types of stays for honeymooners in Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg, what makes a room romantic, what to ask before booking, how to mix categories to fit your budget, and how to get the little extras that make a stay special.

Houseboats: the essential honeymoon night

A houseboat is Kashmir’s most romantic stay. Moored on Dal or Nigeen Lake, these floating homes are built from cedar and walnut wood with carved ceilings, chandeliers, Kashmiri carpets and a front deck facing the water. You reach them by shikara, which makes them feel private and special.

Houseboat categories

CategoryWhat to expectFor honeymooners?
Premium / luxurySpacious rooms, fine carving and furnishings, best locations, attentive staffIdeal

Standard and lowerBasic rooms, simpler furnishingsBetter avoided for a honeymoon

Dal Lake or Nigeen Lake?

  • Dal Lake: the classic view of the Zabarwan hills, easy access to Boulevard Road, livelier with shikaras passing by.
  • Nigeen Lake: smaller, quieter, cleaner water and more privacy; many premium houseboats are here.

What to check

  • Registration with the tourism department.
  • A private deck or front sitting area.
  • Attached bathroom with reliable hot water.
  • Heating and electric blankets in cold months.
  • Number of rooms: a boat with only one or two bedrooms offers more privacy.
  • Whether meals are included and served privately.

Srinagar hotels

After a night on the water, a hotel offers space, a bigger bathroom and more services. Good options for couples include:

  • Lake-view hotels on Boulevard Road: balconies overlooking Dal Lake, close to the ghats and gardens.
  • Heritage and garden properties: historic buildings set in large lawns and chinar groves, often on the slopes above the lake.
  • Five star hotels: spa services, fine dining and lake or mountain views.

Ask for a room on a higher floor with a lake view, and check whether the view is of the lake or of the road.

Gulmarg

Gulmarg has a limited number of hotels, so book early, especially for December to March and April to June.

  • Slope-view rooms: wake up to snow-covered slopes or green meadows.
  • Heating: central heating matters in winter; room heaters alone can leave rooms cold.
  • Fireplaces: some hotels have fireplaces or cosy lounges; perfect for winter evenings.
  • Location: near the Gondola for an early ride before the crowds.

Pahalgam

Pahalgam has the widest range of romantic settings in the mountains.

  • Riverside cottages: wooden cottages on the Lidder with balconies over the water. The most romantic option.
  • Hotels with valley views: rooms looking out over the pine forest and mountains.
  • Quiet stays outside town: properties towards Laripora or Aru offer peace and space.

In winter, check that your property is open and heated.

Sonamarg

For summer honeymooners, a night in Sonamarg offers mountain drama: meadows, glaciers and starry skies. Options include comfortable hotels with views of the peaks and riverside luxury camps with proper beds and attached bathrooms. A night in a camp under the stars is unforgettable on a clear summer night.

What makes a room romantic?

  • A view: lake, river, meadow or mountains.
  • A balcony, deck or window seat.
  • Warmth: good heating in winter, a cosy feel.
  • Privacy: away from lifts, reception and family wings.
  • A comfortable bed and a good bathroom.
  • Thoughtful service: staff who remember your names and preferences.

Mixing categories to fit your budget

You don’t need luxury at every stop. A smart honeymoon budget splurges where it counts:

  • Splurge: one premium houseboat night and a riverside cottage in Pahalgam.
  • Save: a comfortable 3 or 4 star hotel in Srinagar for the remaining nights.
  • Depends on season: in winter, spend more in Gulmarg for warmth and views; in summer, Gulmarg’s mid-range hotels are fine.

Honeymoon extras to request

  • Flower-bed decoration.
  • Honeymoon cake.
  • Candle-light dinner, on the houseboat deck or riverside lawn.
  • Room upgrade, if available.
  • Late check-out on your last day.
  • A bottle of sparkling juice or fruit basket.

Let your operator arrange these; they are often included in honeymoon packages.

Questions to ask before booking

  1. Can you send recent photos of the exact room or houseboat?
  2. Does the room have the view described?
  3. Is heating included, and is there power backup?
  4. Are meals included, and can they be served privately?
  5. What honeymoon arrangements are available?
  6. What is the cancellation policy?

Red flags when booking

Most stays in Kashmir are welcoming and well run, but a few warning signs suggest you should look elsewhere:

  • Only old or very edited photos: ask for recent photos of the exact room.
  • Vague answers about heating: in winter, “we give heaters” may mean one small heater for a big room.
  • No mention of registration: houseboats should be registered with the tourism department.
  • Pressure to pay everything upfront with no clear cancellation policy.
  • Very low prices in peak season: often a sign of a poor location or hidden extras.
  • Inconsistent reviews: look for recent reviews that mention cleanliness, hot water and service.

Houseboat life: what to expect

If you’ve never stayed on a houseboat, here’s what a night is like. A shikara picks you up at the ghat and carries you across to the boat, where the owner or manager welcomes you, often with kahwa. Inside, there’s usually a sitting room with carved ceilings and carpets, a dining room and one to four bedrooms with attached bathrooms. The front deck is the best seat on the lake.

Meals are cooked by the houseboat’s staff and served in the dining room or on the deck. In the evening, shikaras selling flowers, jewellery or snacks may come alongside; a polite “no, thank you” is fine. At night the lake is quiet, apart from the call to prayer and the occasional splash of a passing boat. In the morning, you wake up to the light on the water.

Timing your bookings

  • Peak months (April to June, late December): book houseboats and Gulmarg hotels two to three months ahead.
  • Shoulder months (March, September to November): four to six weeks is usually enough.
  • Winter (January to February): book early for Gulmarg; Srinagar is easier.

Season-by-season stay advice

Spring (March to May)

Ask for rooms with garden or lake views to enjoy the blossoms and fresh green. Heating is still useful in March and early April, especially in Gulmarg. Book early for April, when the Tulip Garden draws crowds.

Summer (June to August)

In Srinagar, choose a room with a fan or air conditioning for warm afternoons. In the mountains, a balcony or deck to enjoy the long evenings is worth paying for. Riverside cottages in Pahalgam and camps in Sonamarg are at their best.

Autumn (September to November)

Ask for rooms that look onto chinar trees or orchards. From late October, check that heating is available, as nights get cold.

Winter (December to February)

Heating is everything. Confirm central heating or reliable room heaters, hot water at all hours and power backup. On houseboats, ask for electric blankets. In Gulmarg, a room facing the slopes lets you watch the snow fall.

What luxury really means in Kashmir

Luxury in Kashmir isn’t only about marble bathrooms and spas, though the best hotels have those too. It’s about space and setting: a premium houseboat with carved walnut ceilings and a private deck on a quiet lake, a heritage property in old gardens, a suite with a fireplace looking out on snowy peaks, or a riverside cottage where the only sound is water. It’s also about service: staff who remember your names, arrange a surprise dinner or a private shikara at sunrise, and make you feel like the only guests. When choosing a luxury stay, ask about these touches, not just the star rating.

Honeymoon stays on a budget

A memorable honeymoon doesn’t have to be expensive. Some ideas:

  • Choose a well-kept deluxe houseboat instead of a premium one.
  • Stay in a comfortable 3 star hotel in Srinagar and spend more on one special night in Pahalgam.
  • Travel in March, September or November for better rates.
  • Ask for honeymoon extras like flower decoration and a cake, which cost little but feel special.
  • Have one candle-light dinner instead of several expensive meals.
