Gulmarg Travel Guide: Gondola, Snow, Meadows and Where to Stay

By the Kashmir Holiday Packages Online team · 13 October 2026 · 9 min read

Gulmarg is the place most people picture when they imagine snow in India. Set in a wide, cup-shaped meadow on the slopes of the Pir Panjal, about 50 kilometres west of Srinagar, it changes completely with the seasons: a ski resort buried in snow from December to March, and a carpet of grass and wildflowers from May to September.

This guide covers everything you need to plan a visit: how to get there, how the famous Gondola works, what to do in each season, where to stay, how much time to give it, and the local rules that catch first-time visitors by surprise.

A short history

The name Gulmarg means “meadow of flowers”. It was a summer retreat for Kashmiri royalty and later became a favourite hill station during the British period, when a golf course, a church and wooden cottages were built on the meadow. St. Mary’s Church, built in 1902, still stands on a small rise in the middle of the resort. After independence Gulmarg developed into a winter sports centre, and the Gondola opened in stages from the late 1990s, turning it into one of the best-known ski destinations in Asia.

Getting to Gulmarg

All visitors travel by road from Srinagar. The route passes through Magam and Tangmarg, after which the road climbs through pine and fir forest in a series of hairpin bends. In good weather the drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.

  • By private cab: the most comfortable option, and the one included in our packages. Your driver stays with you for the day or overnight.
  • By shared taxi: shared Sumo-style taxis run from Srinagar to Tangmarg, where you can change for Gulmarg.
  • In winter: after heavy snowfall, the last stretch from Tangmarg may require vehicles with chains or four-wheel drive. Local regulations sometimes require you to switch to a local taxi at Tangmarg. Build in extra time.

The Gulmarg Gondola explained

The Gondola is the main reason many people come to Gulmarg. It is a cable car that runs in two phases:

PhaseRouteApprox. altitudeBest for
Phase 1Gulmarg base to KongdoriAbout 3,080 mFamilies, first-timers, beginner skiers, sledging
Phase 2Kongdori to Apharwat ridgeClose to 4,000 mSpectacular views, experienced skiers, snow even in early summer

Each phase takes roughly 10 to 12 minutes. From the top of Phase 2 on a clear day you can see far across the Pir Panjal, and in summer short walks lead towards Alpather Lake, which can stay frozen into June.

Booking Gondola tickets

  • Tickets are sold online through the official Gulmarg Gondola booking system run by the Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation. Counter tickets are limited and queues are long in season.
  • Book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for April to June and December to January. Phase 2 tickets sell out first.
  • Carry the ID you used for booking. Names are checked at boarding.
  • Phase 2 is often closed in high wind or heavy snowfall. If it closes, you can usually get a refund or reschedule for that phase. Keep your plans flexible.

Gulmarg in winter (December to March)

In winter Gulmarg becomes a snowfield. Snow depths on the upper slopes can be several metres, and the powder is light and dry, which is why skiers come from around the world.

Things to do in winter

  • Skiing and snowboarding: beginners learn on the nursery slopes near the resort and on Phase 1. Experienced skiers ride Phase 2 and, with a guide, the long off-piste runs from Apharwat.
  • Sledging: local sledge pullers will take you down gentle slopes. Agree the rate first.
  • Snowshoeing and snow walks: quiet walks through snow-covered forest around the resort.
  • Snow-scooter rides: available at the base area for short loops.
  • The igloo café: in recent winters, a large igloo café has been built near the resort. Check locally whether it is open.

Winter tips

  • Temperatures fall well below zero at night. Choose a hotel with central heating, not just room heaters.
  • Rent snow boots and a long coat in Tangmarg or Gulmarg if you don’t have them; it is cheaper than buying.
  • Wear sunglasses or goggles. Snow glare at altitude is intense.
  • Allow a buffer day before your flight home in case of heavy snowfall on the road.

Gulmarg in summer (May to September)

When the snow melts, Gulmarg turns into a vast green bowl edged with forest, and the higher slopes are dotted with wildflowers. It is cooler than the plains by a wide margin, which makes it a popular escape in May and June.

Things to do in summer

  • Gondola to Apharwat: patches of snow often remain at the top until June or July.
  • Pony rides: to Strawberry Valley, Ferozpur Nallah, Khilanmarg and the viewpoint over the valley. Pony rates are fixed by the local association; ask for the rate card.
  • Khilanmarg walk: a 4 to 5 km uphill walk from Gulmarg to a smaller meadow with views of Nanga Parbat on clear days.
  • Alpather Lake: a high-altitude walk from the top of the Gondola for fit walkers. Go with a local guide.
  • Golf: Gulmarg has one of the highest green golf courses in the world. Clubs can be hired.
  • Drung Waterfall: a short drive below Tangmarg. In winter it often freezes into an icefall.
  • Picnics and photography: simply walking the meadow in the evening light is one of the best things to do.

Gulmarg in spring and autumn

March and April are transition months. Snow lingers on the upper slopes while the meadow begins to thaw; some years offer late-season skiing into March. October and November bring crisp air, clear skies and golden light, with the first snow often arriving in November. These shoulder months are quieter and good value.

Where to stay in Gulmarg

Gulmarg has a limited number of hotels, which means rooms are expensive and scarce in peak season. Options range from simple guesthouses to well-known luxury resorts with views of the slopes.

  • Near the Gondola: ideal for skiers; you can walk to the base station.
  • On the meadow edge: best views across Gulmarg, good for summer.
  • In Tangmarg: cheaper stays about 30 minutes below Gulmarg, a sensible choice for budget travellers.

Book early for Christmas, New Year, January and the April to June school-holiday period. Many travellers visit Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar, but staying one night lets you enjoy the resort in the quiet morning before the day-trip crowds arrive.

Local rules that surprise visitors

  • Local taxis and guides: inside the resort, some services are run by local associations. You may be asked to hire a local guide or pony for certain routes.
  • Fixed rates: ponies, sledges and guides have official rates, usually displayed on boards. Ask to see them and agree prices in advance.
  • Plastic: Gulmarg is an ecologically sensitive area. Carry your rubbish back down.
  • Photography: some areas near the Line of Control and military installations are restricted. Follow signs and local advice.

Combining Gulmarg with the rest of Kashmir

Gulmarg fits neatly into most Kashmir itineraries. A classic route is Srinagar for two or three nights, one night in Gulmarg, then one or two nights in Pahalgam. The drive from Gulmarg to Pahalgam takes four to five hours via Srinagar and the Pampore saffron fields. In winter, many travellers stay longer in Gulmarg and skip Pahalgam, where some roads close with snow.

Sample one-night plan

  1. Morning: leave Srinagar after breakfast, stop at Tangmarg for boots and coats in winter, and reach Gulmarg by late morning.
  2. Midday: Gondola Phase 1 and, if open, Phase 2. Have lunch at Kongdori.
  3. Afternoon: sledging or skiing in winter; a pony ride to Strawberry Valley in summer.
  4. Evening: St. Mary’s Church and a slow walk across the meadow at sunset.
  5. Next morning: an early walk before the day visitors arrive, then onward to Pahalgam or back to Srinagar.

Gulmarg with children and older travellers

Gulmarg is a wonderful place for families, as long as you plan around altitude and cold. Children love sledging, building snowmen and the Gondola ride, and the gentle slopes near the resort are ideal for a first taste of snow. Keep these points in mind:

  • Stick to Gondola Phase 1 with young children and older travellers. Phase 2 climbs close to 4,000 metres, where the air is thin and temperatures are much lower.
  • Dress children in more layers than you think they need; they lose heat quickly and often won’t tell you they are cold until they are very cold.
  • Take breaks indoors every hour or so in winter for warm drinks and dry gloves.
  • Travellers with heart or breathing conditions should speak to a doctor before visiting, and avoid strenuous activity on arrival.
  • In summer, pony rides with a guide walking alongside are suitable for children over about five.

Photography in Gulmarg

Gulmarg is one of the most photogenic places in Kashmir. The best light comes early in the morning and in the hour before sunset, when the low sun throws long shadows across the snow or meadow. St. Mary’s Church against snowy peaks, the Gondola cabins climbing through the forest, and the view from Kongdori over the valley are classic shots. On clear days in summer, Nanga Parbat can be seen from Khilanmarg and the upper slopes. Protect your camera from cold and condensation by keeping it in your bag when moving between warm rooms and the outdoors.

Food and drink in Gulmarg

Most visitors eat at their hotel, and many Gulmarg hotels serve good Kashmiri and North Indian food. Small cafés and dhabas near the Gondola base and at Kongdori sell tea, kahwa, Maggi noodles, parathas and snacks, which are welcome on a cold day. Prices are higher than in Srinagar, reflecting the cost of bringing supplies up the mountain.
