Spring in Kashmir is a season of colour and renewal. After the long winter, almond orchards burst into pale pink blossom, the Tulip Garden in Srinagar fills with more than a million flowers, the willows along Dal Lake turn bright green, and the meadows of Gulmarg and Pahalgam slowly shake off their snow. It is one of the most beautiful and popular times to visit, and one that rewards a little planning.
This guide covers what spring looks like month by month, the Tulip Garden and blossom season, where to go, what to pack, crowd and booking tips, and a sample itinerary.
Spring in the valley runs from March to May. The season moves fast, and each month feels different:
| Month | Srinagar weather | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| March | Cool, around 4°C to 16°C; occasional rain | Almond blossoms at Badamwari, snow still in Gulmarg, Navroz celebrations |
| April | Mild, around 8°C to 22°C | Tulip Garden in full bloom, fresh green valleys, spring festivals |
| May | Pleasant, around 12°C to 26°C | All valleys opening, wildflowers in Gulmarg and Pahalgam, Sonamarg reachable |
These are typical ranges; spring weather can swing quickly between sunshine and rain.
The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden, on the slopes of the Zabarwan hills overlooking Dal Lake, is the largest tulip garden in Asia. Every spring, well over a million tulips of dozens of varieties bloom in long terraced rows, alongside hyacinths, daffodils and ranunculus.
In March, the almond orchards of Badamwari, on the slopes of Hari Parbat in Srinagar’s old city, bloom in clouds of white and pale pink. The restored garden is a lovely place to walk, and the blossoms herald the end of winter for Kashmiris. Bloom usually lasts two to three weeks, depending on temperatures.
Srinagar is at its prettiest: tulips, blossoms, fresh green willows on the lake and pleasant days for walking in the Mughal Gardens and old city.
In March and early April, Gulmarg often still has good snow, and late-season skiing may be possible. By May the meadow turns green while snow remains at the top of the Gondola, giving you snow and spring in one day.
The Lidder valley turns green, the river swells with snowmelt, and snow bridges remain at Chandanwari. Aru and Betaab valleys are fresh and quiet before summer crowds.
Sonamarg usually becomes accessible for tourists from around April or May. Early in the season, the meadows are still snowy, which makes for good sledging near Thajiwas.
These meadows bloom with spring flowers from late April and May and are wonderfully uncrowded.
April is one of the busiest months in Kashmir, especially around the Tulip Garden’s peak bloom and Indian school holidays from late May. Hotels, houseboats, flights and Gondola tickets all sell out.
| Night | Stay | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Houseboat, Srinagar | Arrive, sunset shikara |
| 2 | Hotel, Srinagar | Tulip Garden at opening time, Botanical Garden, Mughal Gardens, Badamwari (March) |
| 3 | Srinagar | Old city, shopping, Shankaracharya |
| 4 | Pahalgam | Drive via Pampore and Avantipora; evening by the Lidder |
| 5 | Pahalgam | Aru and Betaab valleys |
| 6 | – | Drive to Srinagar airport |
Add Gulmarg as a day trip from Srinagar or an overnight stop if you want snow. This is close to our Tulip Festival Kashmir Special package.
Spring brings fresh greens to Kashmiri kitchens, including wild spinach and young collard greens (haak). Lotus stem (nadru) is still a staple, and bakeries are busy with fresh bread every morning. Cherries arrive in late May.
The Tulip Garden gets the headlines, but spring is beautiful all over the valley. Here are some quieter ways to enjoy the season:
Spring weather in Kashmir changes quickly. A warm, sunny morning can turn into a cold, rainy afternoon, and mountain resorts can be 10°C colder than Srinagar. The trick is to dress in layers you can add or remove, carry a compact umbrella, and plan indoor options such as a craft workshop or the old city’s shrines for rainy hours. Rain usually passes within a few hours, and the light afterwards is beautiful for photos.
The Tulip Garden is spectacular, but it can also be very busy. These tips help you enjoy it:
Spring offers beautiful contrasts: colourful flowers in the foreground, snowy peaks behind, and fresh green willows reflected in the lake. Shoot the Tulip Garden early in the morning, when the light is soft and dew is on the petals. Use the rows of flowers as leading lines toward the Zabarwan hills. For almond blossoms at Badamwari, frame the white and pink flowers against Hari Parbat’s fort. On Dal Lake, look for reflections of willows and snow-capped mountains on still mornings.
Spring is ideal if you love flowers, mild weather and a mix of green valleys and snowy peaks. It’s very popular, so be ready for crowds in April and book early. If you prefer quieter travel, consider late March (for blossoms and snow) or late May (for green valleys and fewer flowers but smaller crowds).
Usually in the second half of March, with peak bloom in early April. Dates are announced each year depending on the weather.
