Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam or Sonamarg: Where to Stay in Kashmir

Most Kashmir trips are built around four bases: Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Each has a different feel, and where you sleep shapes the whole holiday. Here is how to choose, and how many nights to give each one.

Srinagar: the base for everything

Srinagar is where you land and where most itineraries start and end. It has the widest choice of stays, from heritage hotels on Boulevard Road to houseboats on Dal and Nigeen lakes.

  • Stay here for: houseboats, shikara rides, the Mughal Gardens, the old city and shopping.
  • Nights: 2 to 3. Add more if you plan day trips to Sonamarg, Doodhpathri or Yusmarg.
  • Tip: Spend one night on a houseboat and the rest in a hotel. You get the experience without giving up hotel comforts.

Gulmarg: snow and the Gondola

Gulmarg sits in a high meadow about two hours from Srinagar. Most visitors come for a day, but staying overnight lets you see it quiet, before the day-trip crowds arrive and after they leave.

  • Stay here for: the Gondola, skiing in winter and flower meadows in summer.
  • Nights: 1, or 3 to 6 for a ski holiday.
  • Tip: Book Gondola tickets early in peak season. Phase 2 can close in high wind or heavy snow.

Pahalgam: rivers and valleys

Pahalgam is about three hours from Srinagar, on the Lidder River. It is calmer than Gulmarg, with pine forests, riverside hotels and side valleys to explore.

  • Stay here for: Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari valleys, pony rides to Baisaran, and rafting.
  • Nights: 1 to 2. Two nights let you enjoy a slow evening by the river.
  • Tip: Inner sightseeing uses local union taxis, paid directly. Budget for it.

Sonamarg: glaciers and the road to Ladakh

Sonamarg, the Meadow of Gold, lies about three hours north-east of Srinagar along the Sindh River. It is the gateway to Zojila Pass and the base for the Great Lakes trek.

  • Stay here for: Thajiwas Glacier, river rafting and treks.
  • Nights: Usually a day trip. Stay 1 night in summer for a quieter experience.
  • Tip: Best from May to October. In winter, check road status before you go.

Our recommendation

For a first trip, split 5 nights as 3 in Srinagar (one on a houseboat), 1 in Gulmarg and 1 in Pahalgam, with Sonamarg as a day trip. It balances variety with short drives. If you have 6 nights, add the extra one to Pahalgam.
