Kashmir has been India’s favourite honeymoon destination for generations, and it is not hard to see why. Few places combine still lakes, snowy peaks, pine forests and centuries-old gardens so closely, and fewer still have a pace of life slow enough to let a couple simply enjoy being together.
But the best moments of a Kashmir honeymoon rarely come from ticking off sights. They come from the small, unhurried experiences: a cup of saffron tea on a houseboat deck at dawn, a walk through a quiet meadow, a shared plate of Wazwan. Here are twelve romantic things to do in Kashmir, with practical tips to make each one special, followed by advice on timing, budget and planning.
A night on a traditional houseboat is the defining Kashmir experience for couples. These carved cedar boats, moored on Dal or Nigeen Lake, have private bedrooms, a sitting room with walnut-wood ceilings and a front deck facing the water.
Make it special: choose a premium houseboat on Nigeen Lake for privacy, or a deluxe boat on Dal for the classic view. Ask the owner to decorate your room with flowers and arrange breakfast on the deck. Many couples book two houseboat nights: one on Dal and one on Nigeen.
As the sun sets behind Srinagar, Dal Lake turns gold and pink and the Zabarwan hills fade to violet. A shikara, with its curtained canopy and cushioned seat, is the perfect place to watch it together.
Make it special: book a private shikara for two hours rather than the standard one. Ask your boatman to bring kahwa in a flask and stop somewhere quiet, away from the busy ghats. Some boatmen will decorate the shikara with flowers on request.

It means an early alarm, but gliding through mist-covered channels as the sky brightens, past boats piled with vegetables and flowers, is unforgettable. The floating market is over by about 7 am, so you will be back on your houseboat for breakfast before most visitors are awake.
The Mughal emperors built Kashmir’s gardens as pleasure retreats, and they still feel romantic. Shalimar Bagh was laid out by Emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan. Nishat Bagh’s twelve terraces step down to the lake. Pari Mahal, a ruined terraced palace above Chashme Shahi, has the best sunset view over Dal Lake.
Make it special: visit Shalimar or Nishat early in the morning when gardens are quiet, and save Pari Mahal for sunset. In spring, combine your visit with the Tulip Garden.
Photographers at Nishat Bagh, Dal Lake and Gulmarg rent traditional Kashmiri dresses, pherans and jewellery for couple photos. It is lighthearted, fun and gives you lovely keepsakes.
Make it special: book a professional photographer for a two-hour shoot at sunrise on Dal Lake or in the gardens. Ask your tour operator to recommend someone reliable.
The Gondola climbs in two stages from Gulmarg to the Apharwat ridge, close to 4,000 metres. On a clear day you can see across the Pir Panjal, and in winter the whole world below is white.
Make it special: stay overnight in Gulmarg so you can take the first cabins of the morning before the crowds. Book tickets online in advance, especially for Phase 2.

For couples who have never seen snow, a winter honeymoon is magical. Build a snowman, have a snowball fight, go sledging down Gulmarg’s gentle slopes, or try a beginner ski lesson together.
Make it special: book a hotel with a fireplace or heated room with mountain views, and end the day with hot chocolate or kahwa by the window as the snow falls.
Above Pahalgam, a trail climbs through pine and deodar forest to Baisaran, a wide meadow ringed by trees and peaks. The ride takes about an hour each way, and the ponies are led by local guides, so no experience is needed.
Make it special: go in the morning when the light is soft and the meadow is quiet. Bring a small picnic.
Pahalgam’s riverside cottages and hotels put you right beside the Lidder, a fast, clear river that runs between pine forests. Evenings here are peaceful, with the sound of water and the smell of woodsmoke.
Make it special: choose a riverside room for two nights and ask for a candle-light dinner on the lawn. Many of our honeymoon packages include one.
Betaab Valley is a lush green meadow with a river running through it; Aru is a quieter, wider valley at the end of the road. Both are perfect for a slow afternoon picnic away from the crowds.
Make it special: ask your hotel to pack a picnic with fresh bread, fruit, local cheese and a flask of kahwa.
Kashmir’s ceremonial meal is an experience in itself. A full Wazwan can have more than twenty courses, served on a large copper plate (a trami) traditionally shared by four people. For couples, many Srinagar restaurants offer smaller set Wazwan meals for two.
Must-try dishes: rista (meatballs in red gravy), rogan josh, tabak maaz (crispy lamb ribs), yakhni (lamb in yoghurt gravy) and gushtaba, traditionally the last dish served. Vegetarians can try dum aloo, nadru yakhni and paneer dishes.
Kashmir’s most romantic spots are often the least famous. Spend an afternoon at Doodhpathri, where milky streams run through open meadows. Watch the sunset over Manasbal Lake. Walk to Nilnag Lake through the forests of Yusmarg. These places see far fewer visitors and give you the valley almost to yourselves.

|---|---|---|
| Spring (March–May) | Tulip Garden, blossoms, mild weather | Popular; book early |
| Summer (June–August) | Green meadows, all valleys open | Busy with school holidays in June |
| Autumn (September–November) | Golden chinars, clear skies, fewer crowds | Cold nights from late October |
| Winter (December–February) | Snow, cosy evenings, skiing | Freezing temperatures; flexible plans needed |
Our favourite months for honeymooners are April, May and October: pleasant days, beautiful colours and enough calm to enjoy it all.
