There is something magical about starting married life in the snow. A winter honeymoon in Kashmir means falling flakes outside your window, warm kahwa by a heater, snowball fights on Gulmarg’s slopes and quiet, misty mornings on Dal Lake. It is cosier, quieter and more intimate than the busy spring and summer seasons, and for couples who have never seen snow, it is unforgettable.
This guide covers the best months, where to go, romantic winter experiences, how to stay warm, choosing heated stays, a sample itinerary and tips for travelling in snow.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Early December | Cold, sometimes the first snow in the valley; quieter and good value |
| Late December to New Year | Festive atmosphere, snow in Gulmarg likely; busiest and most expensive |
| January | The heart of Chillai Kalan: coldest, snowiest, most magical |
| February | Deep snow in Gulmarg, slightly milder days, fewer crowds |
| Early March | Late snow on the slopes, thawing valley, blossoms starting |
For the best chance of snow without the New Year crowds, we recommend mid-January to mid-February.
Begin with a heated houseboat on Dal or Nigeen Lake. Winter mornings bring mist over the water, and when it snows, the houseboats wear white roofs and the Mughal Gardens look like paintings. Shikara rides continue in winter, with blankets and kangris to keep you warm.
The heart of a winter honeymoon. Gulmarg is usually snowbound from late December to March, with snow-laden forests, the Gondola rising to the white slopes of Apharwat, and cosy hotels where you can watch snowfall from your room.
Quiet and beautiful under snow, with the Lidder running dark between white banks. Some side roads may close and many hotels shut, so plan with your operator; when open, a heated riverside room is wonderfully peaceful.
| Night | Stay | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Heated houseboat, Srinagar | Arrive, blanket-wrapped shikara ride, candle-lit dinner on board |
| 2 | Srinagar hotel | Harissa breakfast, snowy Mughal Gardens, shopping for pherans and shawls |
| 3 | Gulmarg | Drive up, Gondola Phase 1, sledging |
| 4 | Gulmarg | Ski lesson or snowshoe walk, Gondola Phase 2 if open, fireside evening |
| 5 | Srinagar (Nigeen houseboat) | Return to a quiet houseboat for a final evening |
| 6 | – | Departure |

Many couples dream of a white Christmas or a snowy New Year’s Eve. Gulmarg usually has snow by late December, and hotels host gala dinners on 31 December, often with a compulsory supplement. This is the busiest week of winter, so book at least two months ahead.
Winter rates are lower than spring and summer, except during Christmas and New Year. A 5-night winter honeymoon with a heated houseboat, 4 star hotels, a private cab, breakfast and dinner and honeymoon extras typically starts around ₹22,000 per person on twin sharing, excluding flights. Add Gondola tickets, ski lessons and equipment hire.
Winter is the best season for Kashmir’s warming foods, and sharing them is part of the romance.
Keep batteries warm in an inside pocket, and increase exposure slightly so snow looks white, not grey.
Snow in Srinagar is never guaranteed, and some winters are drier than others. Gulmarg, though, almost always has snow from late December to February, and the Gondola takes you to snowfields even in dry spells. If snow is a must, plan at least two nights in Gulmarg and travel between mid-January and mid-February. Even on clear winter days, the cold, bright light, misty mornings and quiet lake make winter special.
Many honeymooners worry that Gulmarg in winter is only for skiers. It isn’t. Here are lovely ways to spend a snowy day together without ever putting on skis:
Winter days are short in Kashmir. The sun rises around 7:30 am and sets around 5:30 pm in December and January, and it gets cold quickly once it’s gone. Plan outdoor activities between 10 am and 3:30 pm, when the sun is strongest and the snow is softest. Mornings are perfect for a slow breakfast and an extra cup of tea; evenings are for warm rooms, good food and each other’s company.
If you come from a warm part of India, Kashmir’s winter cold can be a shock. A few practical tips:
